The first activity was to follow a treasure map all around the house looking for the shiny plastic rings and candy necklaces and chocolate coins Bernadette’s mother had hidden in the laundry basket, under the sofa, and behind the TV. Then the girls ate a chocolate cake shaped like a treasure chest covered with gold coins, and drank cranberry juice from real wine glasses. Finally they each were given a little wooden box to decorate with pearls and sequins and paint and stickers. But Megan didn’t use stickers or anything else to cover her box. Instead, she painted a beautiful mermaid across its lid, a squiggly pink octopus on one side, and a lot of tiny orange and yellow fish darting through dark green seaweed on the others. She painted the whole background a watery blue.
